This is part of the sprawling No Nichols complex of posts analyzing the rhetoric and reasoning behind certain sorts of support for Israel.
Are you familiar with the slogan “from the river to the sea Palestine will be free”? Tom Nichols of The Atlantic sees it as a “pro-Hamas slogan” with “genocidal meaning.” But I’m not so sure.
1) How slogans are adopted and interpreted, a love-hate relationship, death to America:
(correction at 3:24 “agree” → “disagree”)
2) Talking about important things vs. talking about how we talk about them:
On notions like death to America but life to Americans, or life to people and death to (current) systems, compare be ruthless with systems and kind with people, and #3 here on loving and hating the world.
